History

The original home on this lot was a two-story frame house built by James F. Harbour. James lived in the home until 1909 when he moved to another street in the neighborhood. In 1911 James F. Harbour and William M. Longmire, both from Texas, established the Harbour-Longmire Furniture Company in Oklahoma City. In 1925 they partnered with William T. Hales, who was known as the richest man in Oklahoma City. Together they developed a plan for expansion including a new building at 420 W. Main Street designed by Hawk and Parr. They operated in this building until 1945 when they sold their interests to Spiegel, Inc., of Chicago.

In 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Ira C. Thurmond moved to Oklahoma City from Texas and bought the Harbour’s home on 15th. Ira had built a chain of banks across western Oklahoma during the late 1890s and early 1900s.

In 1925 the Thurmonds wanted a new home, but they did not want to leave the neighborhood, so they razed the frame house and built a new home for $70,000. The new home had a foundation solid enough to support a 10-story building. The design was radically different, adopting the contemporary preferences for English Manor, seen in the steeply pitched roof lines, asymmetrical exterior, and the decorative brick work. The heart of the house features an impressive entry room with sweeping staircase, curved archways and doors.

Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Smith, residents from 1936 to the late 1960s, added a two-story wing on the west, with a library downstairs, and a master bedroom upstairs, which was rebuilt after a 1968 fire.

The next owners, Dr. Marvin D. & Sandra Peyton, replaced and refinished the white oak floors, restored arched windows, renovated a non-functioning bathroom, and rehabilitated the slate roof.

They also re-landscaped the backyard and added a pool, fountain, spa, and gazebo. The Peytons had three children in the home so they created a second gathering place by combining several small rooms in and around the kitchen. The result was a welcoming center of family activity featuring a gourmet kitchen, breakfast bar, and TV lounge area with overstuffed chairs. Each of the four bedrooms has its own bathroom, and two have private balconies. The Peytons featured their home on the 2000 Heritage Hills Home Tour.
