History
Built around the turn of the century, this home is a Prairie Farm design with a square floor plan, functional arrangement of rooms, and minimal decorative features. The offset doorway opens to an entry hall with the charming and unusual feature of a fireplace.
The first known occupants were Ethel and Charles B. Pope in 1906. Ethel’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. Marcus C. Milner, also lived in the home. Charles, a native of Nebraska, came to Oklahoma City during the late 1890s and opened the Pope Shoe Store. Charles added the rock veneer to the home in 1930.
After the Pope family moved out, the home was used as a boarding house from 1936 to 1954 and was then returned to a single-family home.
Dr. Robert and Jackie Shaver lived in the home in the 1960s with their young children, Amy and Jeffrey. Robert was an ophthalmologist as well as his father, S.R. Shaver. Years later Jeffrey became a third-generation ophthalmologist as well.
In 1970 the home was purchased by Jane & David Edmonds, who remodeled, gutted the kitchen, added a bathroom upstairs, and built a pool in the backyard. The Edmonds had three children, Bentley, Brooke, and Bradley.
In the 1990s the Edmonds remodeled the kitchen and added a large Club Room with French doors and windows overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens and pool. The back yard also includes a guest house and a charming garden gate.
The Edmonds featured their home on the Heritage Hills Home Tour in 1974 and 1995. Throughout the years they created a delightful interior combining contemporary colors and Victorian antiques.
