History
Bertha and Clarence L. Henley built this colonial and Victorian home in 1908. Shortly after the initial construction they added a large two-story addition on the east side. The new room on the first floor was used as a ballroom and the Henleys were well known for their parties
Bertha was a native of Macon, Missouri, where she studied law in her father‘s law office. After she was admitted to the bar in Missouri, she moved to Oklahoma territory in 1901 and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor. She also entered politics. In Oklahoma City she helped organize the Committee of 100, which fought for the progressive city manager form of government, and served as state chairperson of the Women’s Suffrage Committee the year that women won the right to vote.
The home was purchased by Faye and Charles N. “Bud” Bassett in 1955. They were married in 1943, a year after Faye graduated from Classen High School. Bud was born in 1919 in Oklahoma City and attended Classen High School. He was a liaison pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII, then graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He founded C. 'Bud' Bassett Realty in 1946 and belonged to the city, state and national Associations of Realtors for 58 years.
Faye A. (Oursler) Bassett was born in 1925. She enjoyed gardening, teaching adult Sunday school, and leading Bible studies at First Presbyterian Church. She also was a counselor as a Court-Appointed Advocate for Youth.
Faye and Bud added a larger kitchen and a game room and raised four children in the home, Charlene, Linda, Barbara, and Charles Jr. Bud died in 2004 at the age of 85. Faye lived in the home until her death at age 88 in 2013.
Current owners are Matthew & Lindsey Zabel.
Lindsey shared the following thoughts on living in their home, "When I was little we would come to a Christmas party in the area and I knew from a very young age that it was where I wanted to live when I grew up! We actually tried to buy our house 3 times and we loved the street and saw a lot of potential for the house even though it needed a lot of love! Even though the house is 112 years we are only the 3rd family to actually live in the home and the 4th owners. On the second floor there is a “bookcase” that is really a door to a hidden entrance to a staircase that leads to the wine cellar. We have finished out the 3rd floor, the wine cellar and added a pool, cabana and outdoor living in the backyard, and made updates throughout the home. We absolutely love our home, street, and neighborhood! All of the huge trees make it enjoyable to go on walks year round, and everyone is so friendly and social. It’s so fun to live here and know all of your neighbors and hangout together!”
