History

This two-story brick foursquare home emphasized efficient use of floor space and minimal decorative treatment, all for the affordable price of $10,000. Traces of its 19th century architectural heritage include the rusticated stone on the porch columns and wall, arched windows on either side of the chimney, and subtle dentil molding along the cornice.

The home was built by Mr. Joseph St. Mary, manager of the King, Collie and Company Cotton Brokerage House. It changed hands numerous times until 1925 when it was purchased by Bess Stewart and Harry Newbill. Bess was a descendent of an early Oklahoma pioneer family. Harry was born August 21, 1880, in Virginia and his family was a member of the First Families of Virginia. Bess and Harry were owners of Newbill’s Clothing and Furnishings. Harry died January 5, 1954, at the age of 73. Bess remained in the house until 1977.

Bess and Harry had a daughter, Marcia Ann, who was born July 3, 1922. Marcia attended Barnard College, Pine Manor College, and the University of Oklahoma. In 1950, Marcia married James Ernest Fender and moved to Fort Worth where she was very active in community activities. Ernest was a long time Acme Brick executive.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Acres purchased the home in 1978 and began renovations.
