History

Mary Milner and Charles E Johnson built this home in 1907. Charles, a native of Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1889 at the age of 19 and eventually attended business school in Iowa and the University of Texas Law School. In 1902 he moved to Oklahoma City, opened a law practice, and met his future wife, Mary Milner, whom he married in 1905.

In 1950, when Charles died, Mary was joined in the house by her niece, Elizabeth Pope Van Cleef, and her husband, C. Edgar Van Cleef. Elizabeth had been raised in the neighborhood at 504 NW 15th, just a block away.

C. Edgar was born June 3, 1896, in Seneca, Kansas. He was raised in Oklahoma City and attended Central High School before joining the service during World War I. He attended the University of Michigan, then returned to Oklahoma City and found a job with a wholesale grocery company, a position he held for 12 years. In 1925 he married Elizabeth Pope and opened a life insurance office. They bought the house at 615 N.W. 15th and lived there until 1950, when they moved back to this house. C. Edgar was a member of the housing authority in the 1960s and was a former chair of the OKC Chamber of Commerce. In 1977, C. Edgar was awarded a lifetime membership on the Salvation Army board of directors.

Elizabeth was born March 13, 1900, in Oklahoma City. She attended the University of Oklahoma and was a volunteer worker at the Oklahoma Medical Center. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and also was one of the first members of the Junior League of Oklahoma City. C. Edgar and Elizabeth had two sons, Richard, and Robert, and a daughter, Jane. Their home was featured on the 1971 Home Tour.

Elizabeth died August 1, 1973, in Portland, Maine at age 73 while vacationing. C. Edgar died in December 1988 at the age of 92. In 1989 the home was purchased by Marion and Richard Thompson, the next-door neighbors to the east. The Thompsons completely renovated the home, from structural repairs to adding bathrooms, and put it on the market.
